The fashion world is (finally) experiencing a return to color. Despite Pantone’s practical take on the 2026 color of the year (Cloud Dancer: a soft, airy, and tranquil white, ICYMI), many are taking a step in the opposite direction and welcoming more excitement into their wardrobes.

Enter the monochrome outfit: an ensemble styled in all one color or varying shades of the same. Monochrome fashion is praised for its ability to create effortlessly put-together outfits with capsule wardrobe staples and minimalist silhouettes – all while naturally slimming and elongating the body. Considered a godsend by many fashionistas during the great wardrobe reset of the early 2020’s, this foolproof aesthetic continues to grow in popularity today.

Since discovering my color season, monochrome styling has become one of my favorite outfit formulas. If you want to incorporate more color into your everyday outfits, it’s a great technique to begin with because it’s easier to match “like with like” than different colors.

For this post, I’ve rounded up six easy tips for styling monochrome outfits that look both modern and expensive, all from your own closet. These tips will help you create stylish, single color outfits while upgrading your personal style, enabling you to get more wear out of your everyday wardrobe.

It’s time to find the colorful clothing collecting dust in your closet and get styling!

How to Style a Monochrome Outfit

1. Head-to-Toe, Accessories Included

A true monochrome outfit is when every piece of your look is in the same color, including shoes and accessories. While easily accomplished with neutrals, colorful monochrome styling also makes the perfect statement while elevating the most casual pieces. Start with a matching set and add coordinated accessories and footwear (bonus points for nail color and make-up, of course!).

Pro-Tip: Most brands typically use the same color throughout a collection, making it easy to pull off head-to-toe monochrome that looks expensive instead of too matchy-matchy.

2. Stack Tonal Shades

Styling monochrome outfits becomes more personal when you opt for tonal dressing, or stacking tonal shades of the same color in your look. For example, combining purple tones, such as plum, burgundy, and grape, creates a more intentional look without looking costumey. This is my preferred approach when styling with colors (non-neutrals) because it’s more realistic for what’s already in my wardrobe.

Pro-Tip: Tonal outfits look best when all tones are either cool or warm. However, a tiny warm accent against a cool-toned outfit (and vice versa) is the best way to add subtle depth and avoid disharmony.

3. Add a Pop of Color

Give your single color outfits a lift by adding a pop of color through an intentional layer, accessory, or footwear. This is the quickest way to update a black monochromatic outfit when it’s too warm to layer or your neutrals are simply falling flat. Colorblocking was all over the runways, and this styling hack keeps your looks fresh and elevated without spending a dime.

Pro-Tip: Consider an item that enhances your existing monochrome outfit through both form and function, like how I turned a sleeveless going-out look into something more appropriate for cold weather by layering a bodysuit underneath.

4. Colorblock with Sister Shades

If styling monochrome outfits in all one color is too strict for your wardrobe, try pairing sister shades, which are colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel. This tip combines the depth of tonal dressing with the playfulness of color blocking. Some example color pairings would be red and pink, green and teal, taupe and beige, or white and cream.

Pro-Tip: If you don’t have matching footwear, use the color pop technique (tip #4) and coordinate with a matching handbag or piece of jewelry for an effortlessly polished tonal vibe.

5. Mix Textures

Add interest and depth to your monochrome outfits by mixing different textures. This approach is especially useful when styling with dark colors that easily fall flat. Mix and match everything from leather to faux fur, silk, knits, and even sequins to create stylish outfits perfect for work or play, as the monochrome palette ties everything together.

Pro-Tip: When styling a monochromatic outfit with a dress and heels, add a matching textured clutch to easily create dimension while completing the look as your third piece. Textured monochrome is a total statement.

6. Go Bold with a Matching Pattern or Print

Take your monochrome styling to the next level by adding a matching print to your outfit. Your print or pattern should heavily feature your monochrome color, in keeping with the aesthetic. Aim for matching shoes and accessories for the most put-together look, while still making a statement (and a dopamine hit!).

Pro-Tip: The lite version of this styling tip keeps your monochrome look intact while adding a small accent print for interest (similar to the pop of color in tip #4) instead. In this case, the print doesn’t need to feature the same color as the rest of your outfit for a subtle, bold twist.

What color will your styling your monochrome outfits with this year? I’d love to know in the comments, below.
