While high summer hits the northern hemisphere, I can’t help thinking about the endless array of new fall styles with which to adorn my body with next season.

I mean, is there anything better than fall fashion when it comes to autumn? Sure the leaves change color, the days get cooler while the humidity of summer zaps away, apple picking, pumpkin spice, Halloween, and everything nice…and fall runway hitting the high street? Okay, the entire season gets a “100” in my book.

And there’s a lot to look forward for 2024 fall styles from draped silhouettes, ladylike embellishments, elevated plaids, gorgeous shades of olive green, statement jackets, to chic layering. If you were feeling any certain way about the past few years of fashion being void of personality and depth, you can rest easy now. Color is back! Embellishments are back! Pants are back (as if anyone actually stopped wearing them…)!

Now, let’s dive into the hottest fall fashion trends for 2024 and how you can make them your own!

Best Fashion Trends Fall 2024

1. Outfit Of The Day (But Make It Elevated)

Fall winter 2024/2025 fashion trends mark the start of a return to getting dressed, if you will. Designers on the runway agree that elevated day dressing makes a comeback! For anyone that loves clothes, I feel like this is a HUGE YES! This time around the emphasis is on femininity, wearability and timelessness, perfect for a day at the office, running errands, working from home, and even on the weekends out!

Wool separates, loafers, elevated duffle and waist belt at Bottega Veneta – Matthieu Blazy

From relaxed trousers that feel as good as they look (so those leggings only make their appearance at the gym or on the dog walk), to sleek turtlenecks that keep the body cozy and comfortable, to that tailored coat with a pair of wide leg jeans and a long scarf these styles are why we get dressed in the first place!

Chanel uses contrasting accessories to add depth to matching ivory knitwear – I’m absolutely in love with this look!

Attention to detail is pertinent–make those accessories a part of your outfit (rather than just wearing a belt because you needed to hold your pants in place)!

Giada showcases a sleek two-tone outfit with a chic burgundy (on trend color) jacket and matching hip belt with beige trousers turtleneck and ankle boots.

The last few years of ultra-casual everyday outfits pushed the boundaries of how undone one can look and still walk out the door…which honestly I never understood. If I don’t look good my best, then I definitely don’t feel good either (and I’ve tested that idea many a time!).

Gauchere takes care of every detail in this casual look that works for day or night, meeting friends for lunch or even a date night outfit.

The focus of this “trend” is more on the mindset of choosing elevated, feminine pieces that feel good to wear, are comfortable, presentable in different environments, and that pair well with the rest of your wardrobe. I see this as mixing the elements of a solid capsule wardrobe with more trendy styles to make it your own.

Zimmerman pairs an oversized knit with a structured maxi skirt – the perfect weekend or smart casual office outfit!

Opt for a chic cardigan that’s just as warm as your favorite hoodie and pair it with relaxed wool trousers and a broken-in loafer. Try finishing your outfit with a tailored wool coat rather than a puffer jacket when you’re running errands. Dress to impress, but all day, everyday…or at least when you’re leaving the house.

2. Plaid Takes On The World

It’s no surprise that plaid entered the conversation in terms of fall winter 2024 fashion trends on the runway this year. However, this is more than your run-of-the-mill plaid shirt spotted at every bonfire, pumpkin patch and fall festival. If the whole pumpkin spice aesthetic made plaid basic, this trend makes plaid cool again.

Chloe showcases an oversized plaid coat in the season’s most coveted color: shades of olive green.

This is the grown-up version of plaid…or tartan should we say?! Honestly, the color options varied by designer, but one thing’s certain: this style looks great on everything from full-length maxi skirts to statement coats, and matching tweed sets.

Helmet Lang juxtaposes three different plaid styles in matching colors that build and complement the aesthetic.

Now you don’t need to wear a full-plaid outfit to sport this style trend for fall. A chic blazer or even an accent piece like a scarf is easily paired with a minimalist wardrobe or all-black look for a timeless, everyday outfit.

Christian Dior showcases a matching plaid set that can easily be worn as separates all fall and winter.

Plaid is one thing that doesn’t need to go out of style if you shop for the right pieces. Stick to classic wardrobe essentials such as scarves, wool coats, pencil skirts, maxi skirts, or even a sweater vest. Or, opt for a sleeker button-down than a traditional thermal such as a silk, satin, or silk-cotton blend for the office. Choose colors that flatter your complexion and play nicely with the rest of your wardrobe for maximum wearability.

I personally found a vintage wool coat from the 1960’s on Etsy with a detachable cape a few years ago. It’s one of my favorite pieces and never ceases to bring compliments and spark conversation when I wear it out. Cannot wait to wear it this fall!

3. FURRRRREAL Or Not?

The cooler days of fall and winter call for warmth and coziness, as is the overwhelming evidence of fur and all things plush on the runway for fall 2024 women’s fashion trends. And with the ever-increasing push for ethical fashion from both designers and consumers alike, the faux fur styles just get better and better each year.

Julien Dossena for Paco Rabanne
Alberta Ferretti styles a fur scarf over a leather jacket and skirt, creating a chic, tonal look for fall that would easily look stylish with a pair of jeans or trousers.

Whether you’re in the market for a vintage fur, already have one collecting dust for that special day in your wardrobe, or keen to purchase one of these cropped faux fur coats that will be everywhere come fall…there’s no need to save it for that wedding in November. Style yours with jeans, dresses, skirts, leather trousers and make it part of your elevated outfit of the day!

Givenchy slays an all-black outfit with a pop of color in the shoes.
Loewe styles a brown fur bomber jacket over a pair of relaxed ivory trousers.

We’ll all have more fun if we actually wear the clothes we have in our closets, rather than just waiting for that special occasion…that may never even come around. Sustainable fashion is the fashion you actually wear! Let’s go!

4. Haute BOHÈME

Fall/winter 2024 fashion had everyone abuzz with the haute bohéme, or boho chic aesthetic. From Chloé to Isabel Marant, this trend embodies all the best of bohemian style for 2024: drape, feathers, fringe, a touch of western, dreamy vibes, lace and sheer, chunky jewelry and cute leather accessories to tie it all together.

Isabel Marant packs it all into one look: fringe, leopard, faux fur, puffer, turtlenecks, drape, and earth tones!

5. Dress Like A Lady

Designers paid an homage to the 1950s and 1960s this fall fashion season with classic, ladylike styles such as matching tweed sets, shift dresses, plunging necklines, and court shoes (aka classic pumps). This fall style trend definitely keeps in-line with the overarching “dress to impress” concept that’s re-emerging since before the days of 2020.

Think of a modern take on “ladies who lunch” with wool car coats, floral dresses, pearl necklaces, pointed toe pumps, silk gowns, cashmere cardigans and pencil skirts. The trend brings to mind the FX mini series Feud: Truman Capote versus The Swans, if you’re looking for more inspiration on how to wear this elegant style.

Miu Miu does this aesthetic perfectly understated and chic. The pointy-toe Mary Jane pumps and burgundy bag carried at the waist make the style modern and on-trend for fall without going overboard.
Chanel plays with color and tweed in this gorgeous ensemble.

Whether you’re one to embody the entire elegant aesthetic as part of your workwear or special occasion, I personally love to take bits and pieces of each trend and add them to part of a casual outfit to take things up a notch. In other words, those chic lady jackets that have been in every store this year aren’t going anywhere!

Consider yourself more of a tomboy or just love to live in jeans and trousers? Go for a structured handbag, a pair of pointy toe patent leather pumps, or knit cardigan with pearl buttons to style with the rest of your casual outfit. As for me, I’ll be looking for new ways to wear my vintage LBD, a la Breakfast at Tiffany’s style made modern.

6. LeopardCore

If there’s one bold print that has stood the test of time, it’s leopard. Leopard prints have been out and about this year and they’re here to stay for fall winter 2024 fashion trends.

Isabel Marant slays this gorgeous leopard maxi dress with a chic waist belt, fringe bag and slouchy boots.
Zimmerman goes for a drapey, head to toe style, which for an everyday outfit translates nicely to a chic silk blouse paired with trousers or a denim maxi skirt.

Like so many other trends, it’s up to you to decide how this can work in your wardrobe. Do you go all out with a plush statement coat you can pull out year after year? Or do you add a bit of interest to your minimal chic outfits with a chic pair of leopard print pumps?

Maybe you go for a stylish clutch, reminiscent of the late 2000s, and perfectly on-trend for fall? Let’s not forget a pair of leopard tights, a fun print paired with that LBD!

Dolce & Gabbana goes all out with matching statement pieces in leopard. A cropped jacket would be the perfect addition to a wardrobe; or a bold maxi skirt.

This is another style to shop vintage and thrift stores for to find something unique. Or browse the high street to get your feet wet without breaking the bank for this on-fire trend. RARRR!

7. Juxtaposition

Last but not least, and my personal favorite of these fall 2024 style trends is juxtaposition! Juxtaposition is using contrasting pieces to create something unique. While this concept is nothing new to the world of fashion or style, it’s something I noticed a great deal more on the fall 2024 runways than in years past.

Beyond obsessed with Isabel Marant’s take on edgy-boho: an oversized leather puffer jacket with a belted asymmetric skirt. Stevie Nicks meets 1980s/futuristic biker vibes.
Chanel mixes business with pleasure in a full tweed suit styled with a shiny gold belt and accessories.

To me, the notion of juxtaposition follows the concept of owning your sense of style. While one and done pieces and matching sets always have their place in a wardrobe, it’s the ability to pair together different separates and accessories to create a fresh look. Use unexpected pieces to liven up an ensemble of basics or your go-to capsule outfit, a popular method used in Parisian chic style.

Tod’s blends different textures to create an elevated, preppy outfit for fall winter 2024/2025.
Ralph Lauren does a chunky knit with a sleek skirt.

This season designers played with different layers, silhouettes, aesthetics, and textures to create interesting runway looks that embody everything I love about the fall. Rather than basic and boring, even simple pieces paired together can create the most interesting outfit-trés chic!

This style trend is the answer to anyone on a budget or trying to live more sustainably because you don’t have to purchase a brand new wardrobe. You can get away with updating a few pieces and style them with your existing wardrobe to create outfits. Mix old and new pieces, contrasting colors, leather with fur, edgy with classic, and see your closet come to life again. Experimentation is key, so set aside a few hours on your day off and start creating outfits.

  1. Is it really necessary to wear clothes 2 sizes too large to be in style?

    1. Most definitely not! Per my post, some of the trends are showing more feminine, tailored outfits as opposed to the oversized looks of the past several years. However, both aesthetics can certainly be worn stylishly if you balance your proportions right! I always say your most stylish outfits are the ones in which you yourself look and feel amazing in. Oversized looks tend to hide my curves, so I’ve really been going for more body-con outfits lately and I’m celebrating that! You do you <3
P.S. I totally bought a sweater two sizes above my normal the other day because the two sizes above looked more like my actual size haha!
